One of my favorite comments on my work in the past came from an Atheist who said, “This guy proves that Christianity and common sense do not have to be mutually exclusive.” Indeed, it feels as though there is a strong correlation between religiosity and illogical reasoning. I’m sure some reading this would say there is a correlation — but I digress.
Stephen Colbert seems to prove, even better than I could ever hope, that logic and faith aren’t antithetical to one another. In an interview for Witness Today, Colbert discusses how he manages to be a devout Christian and not be an idiot.
Faith ultimately can’t be argued, faith has to be felt. And hopefully you can still feel your faith fully, and let your mind have a logical life of its own, and they do not defy each other, but complement each other, because…logic itself will not lead me to God. And, so, hopefully I can use my mind to make my jokes, and not deny my love for God at the same time.
Let’s just hope this phenomenon of logical thinking in religious circles spreads more quickly than bigoted ignorance. One can hope, right?
