Most people would panic if they witnessed a baby placing a handgun in his or her mouth, but not this Indiana couple! When police picked up Michael Barnes after he agreed to illegally sell a handgun to an undercover police officer over social media, investigators discovered a chilling video that shows Barnes’ baby playing with a very real gun.
As the proud parents joyfully recorded, they worked hard to teach the one-year-old proper NRA-approved gun safety: That is to say that they taught the child to say “bang, bang” and “pow pow” as the little girl gleefully played with the instrument of death, even placing the gun in her mouth multiple times.
Police positively identified the adults in the video as Barnes and the child’s mother, Toni Wilson, during a follow-up investigation. The gun’s magazine appeared to be removed, but it is unclear if ammunition was in the chamber.
According to police:
Barnes can be heard telling the child to say ‘pow’ on multiple occasions while the child plays with the gun. The video also shows the child placing the muzzle of the gun in her mouth. At no point does Barnes try to stop the child from playing with the gun.
Wilson attempted to deceive police into believing the weapon was a pellet gun, but it was identified as a .40 caliber handgun.
Barnes and Wilson face numerous charges, including child neglect and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon. In addition, Barnes faces charges in his attempt to illegally offload one of his weapons.
The one-year-old child, along with the couple’s one-month-old twins were placed in emergency care.
On average, eight children and teens are killed by guns daily. The majority of unintentional shooting deaths — 65 percent — occur in the home, with 30 percent occurring when someone was playing with a gun, as these Parents of the Year contenders allowed their baby to do.
