Robert Gates, president of the Boy Scouts of America, took a major first step against gay discrimination last Thursday at the groups annual meeting in Atlanta, by stating that a change in policy banning gays from becoming boy scout leaders must happen and sooner rather than later. The former Secretary of Defense did not move too swiftly by calling for implementation of the policy just yet, but rather stated practically that “the courts will simply order us at some point to change our policy.”
He’s exactly right – they will at some point. It’s discrimination, plain and simple. When that point will happen, it’s too early to tell. But, in the mean time you can count on religious leaders to fight tooth and nail, doing everything in their power to stop it from happening. They are already losing the fight on gay marriage, now they will have to fight extra harder to keep gays from climbing up the ranks of their beloved boy scouts.
It didn’t take long for one such religious figure, Bryan Fischer, to start developing a counter-offensive strategy, one based entirely on fear and lies.
Bryan took to the airwaves spewing hate and long-ago debunked statistics, trying his best to use logic to explain why homosexuals aren’t fit to be boy scout leaders. The main reason? Homos are more likely to molest your children, he says.
This is a moral catastrophe. Because, we know there is a high degree of correlation between homophobia and pedophilia. Homosexuals comprise 2% of the population, yet 33% of all the incidences of sexual molestation is caused by them. Robert Gates is going to open the flood gates here. It’s going to be gay pedophiles scouting for boys. No longer the Boy Scouts of America. It’s going to be the Gay Pedophiles of America.
It’s really no surprise he used this statistic to try and make his point. Bible-trumpeters aren’t always known for being the best informed, and they have been misusing stereotypes for years about homosexuals. The Southern Poverty Law Center does an excellent job of not just debunking this myth, but other popular myths, as well.
The propaganda: Gay men molest children at far higher rates than heterosexuals.
The verdict: Not true.
According to the American Psychological Association, “homosexual men are NOT more likely to abuse children than heterosexual men are.” Additionally, Gregory Herek, a professor at the University of California, Davis, and one of the nation’s foremost researchers on prejudice against sexual minorities, found absolutely no evidence that gay men molest children at higher rates than heterosexual men.
