Grab the kleenex, this one is a tear jerker.
Matthew Heisler was only 21 years old when he died from complications following a house fire. At just 16 years old, realizing his own mortality, Heisler decided to become an organ donor when he received his driver’s license.
“He made the decision that if life ever slipped away from him, he would give life to someone else,” Jared Heisler, Matthew’s father, said.
After nearly three years of waiting on the transplant list, Tom Meeks, a Vietnam Veteran, received Matthew’s heart. He had been diagnosed with a rare and fatal heart disease.
When one decides to become an organ donor, both parties have the option to reveal who they are. In this case, Meeks was able to give a gift back to Matthew’s parents.
Eight months after losing their son, they were able to hear his heart beating again.
“This is awesome,” Jared Heisler said after he listened.
Though Matthew is no longer alive, he was able to give a new lease on life to a total of 60 people. This includes a 46- year-old woman and a 56-year-old woman who each received one of Matthew’s kidneys, and a 61-year-old man who received his liver.
