The “ha ha Trump is crazy” days are over. He may not be president yet but his actions are already causing serious consequences.
Trump intentionally provoked China with a foolish phone call to the Taiwanese president (a major diplomatic no-no), and then mocked their predictably outraged response with a series of tweets and an interview with Fox suggesting he would attempt to blackmail them into better trade deals in exchange for backing out of his newfound relationship with Taiwan.
“I fully understand the ‘one China’ policy, but I don’t know why we have to be bound by a ‘one China’ policy unless we make a deal with China having to do with other things, including trade.”
Trump finally got a response – although not the one he probably hoped for.
China just sent one of its massive nuclear bombers outside of its borders in a “show of force,” in what U.S. officials are already calling a “message” to President-elect Trump. A nuclear bomber.
Via the Independent:
The Xian H-6 bomber flew along the disputed ‘nine-dash line’ around the South China Sea on Thursday, US officials told Fox News, passing over a number of disputed islands. The officials said it was designed to send a message to the incoming administration.
The Pentagon found out about the flight on Friday and officials said it was the first long-range flight along the demarcation line in more than 18 months – though this sortie extended further than previous ones.
The H-6 is the Chinese version of the Russian Tupolev Tu-16 jet bomber and has been used by China to drop nuclear devices in tests.
It was bad timing for Trump, who already humiliated himself this week by admitting that he doesn’t think he needs to get intelligence briefings and skips most of the ones set up for him. Presumably, “Don’t piss off China with a phone call” was among the bullet points on the memos he’s ignored.
As Trump continues to be outplayed on the world stage, experts say China is becoming increasingly militaristic. Even worse, knowing America has absolutely nobody at the helm, means China likely feels emboldened to continue expanding out into the disputed South China Sea, terrifying its neighbors.
The head of one of America’s secret spy agencies recently disclosed that China is seeking to control the South China Sea through the covert development of military facilities on thousands of acres of reclaimed islands.
Alas Trump has probably never even seen this information, as it has not aired on Fox and Friends or gotten a write-up on Breitbart. Instead, he will continue to tweet and rely on empty threats while the rest of the world seizes this opportunity – a gift from 61 million Americans – to reshuffle the world stage.
