It shouldn’t really surprise anyone when GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee says anything ignorant or racist anymore. This former Baptist preacher has said some pretty horrifying things – like supporting a 10-year-old victim being forced to carry her rapist’s baby to term or his recent racist tweet about not trusting Koreans with dogs. His ignorance of U.S. law is also pretty alarming when he says things like Dred Scott is still “the law of the land.”
Now just when you thought Mike Huckabee couldn’t sink any lower, he proves that wrong and shows his heartless ignorance knows no bounds.
On a recent appearance of a popular radio show, Mickelson in the Morning, Huckabee joins host Jan Mickelson in whining about how the “pagan invention” of jails have become an ineffective progressive tool. What is the answer according to Mickelson and Huckabee? Slavery. Yep, you read that right, slavery – because the Bible tells them so. Mickelson points to Exodus saying:
“It says, if a person steals, they have to pay it back two-fold, four-fold. If they don’t have anything, we’re supposed to take them down and sell them.”
The host goes on to imply that having people sit on their “stump in jail” goes against the 13th amendment, and is, therefore, un-American as well as anti-Biblical. Huckabee is quick to agree:
“Sometimes the best way to deal with a nonviolent criminal behavior is what you just suggested.”
I’m not sure how they think this would fly in the courts when even debtor’s prison was ruled to be illegal by SCOTUS in 1983. Then again, Mickelson has already proposed slavery as a viable solution to illegal immigration, adding that having them build a wall along the Mexican border as punishment would be totally fair. I suppose it’s inevitable that when you get two heartless conservative monsters together in a room, the stupidity will feed off each other and multiply.
