Charles Manson, Life Prisoner, To Wed; LGBTQ Population Still Waits For Marriage Equality

Charles Manson, accused of starting a cult to carry out murders for him in the 1960’s, has received his license to wed. The 80-year-old San Quentin inmate is gearing up to marry 26-year-old Afton Elaine Burton, or “Star,”  as soon as the paperwork is properly filed with the prison and hopes to wed in December.

Burton has been working on Manson’s case for over nine years in an effort to free the cult leader. She says she will marry Manson to gain access to information that only next of kin are able have access to but it’s about more than just marital rights.

“It is so obvious he was being railroaded.” –“Star” Burton

According to The Associated Press, Burton said:

Y’all can know that it’s true. It’s going to happen. I love him. I’m with him. There’s all kinds of things.

The AP also reports that if Manson hadn’t gotten into trouble for two weapons violations and failure to provide a urine sample this month, he would have been married much sooner.

However, if Manson does end up tying the knot he will not be allowed conjugal visits, meaning a sexless marriage for the couple. Manson will not be up for parole until 2027, but Burton hopes to help exonerate the man who was convicted of the murders of Sharon Tate and Leno and Rosemary LaBianco.

Star has even carved an ‘X’ into her forehead to match the convicted women from the Manson Family who also etched an ‘X’ into their foreheads during the 1971 trial.

Which leads me to marriage equality

I’m not against prison marriage but I have to wonder, where is the traditional marriage crowd!? Why aren’t they beating down the doors at San Quentin to stop this “sinful” marriage? With so many law-abiding, tax-paying citizens who just happen to be homosexual, why do they have less rights (in many states) than Charles Manson in the marriage department?

If the anti-gay marriage crowd has nothing to say on this issue, and meets this non-traditional marriage with silence, we have to ask them to stop pretending that blocking gay marriage is upholding any sort of sanctity of marriage. Because marriage to a life prisoner happens all the time, and the church crowd does not seem to care.

So maybe, just maybe, it’s not about traditional marriage at all and more about punishing gay people worse than life prisoners?

Manson will be assigned a wedding coordinator, is allowed to invite 10 outside guests and will be married in an inmate visitation room. The mass murderer has no chance of parole until 2027 but given his age and how much trouble he has gotten into in prison it doesn’t seem likely he will ever be free.
