Randy Boehning, a Republican North Dakota lawmaker, recently voted against a bill that would have protected the LGBT community from being discriminated against. The bill would have added sexual orientation to existing laws that already protect people based on race, color, sex, national origin, age, physical or mental disability, marital status or if they receive public assistance.
On April 3, The Forum, a Fargo newspaper, pictured every legislator on their front page that voted against the bill.
Dustin Smith, a 21-year-old man from Bismarck, recognized Randy Boehning has someone he’d been corresponding with on the gay hookup app, Grindr. Randy Boehning identifies himself on Grindr as “Top Man!” and has been sending Dustin Smith sexually explicit messages and unsolicited photos of his penis for over eighteen months.
When first questioned about this, Boehning denied it. But over the weekend he finally admitted that he was in fact “Top man!” and that while most of his family and friends didn’t know that he is attracted to men as well as women, he is relieved that his secret is finally out:
The 1,000-pound gorilla has been lifted. I have to confront it at some point.
This is not the first time Boehning has voted against LGBT anti-discrimination bills and says that he is not being hypocritical, rather he is voting in the manner in which his constituents would want him to. He also said that he took issue with the language in the bill because it would also protect people that are “perceived” to be gay, and if the language were changed he might change his vote.
Boehning, who is a self-employed general contractor and a renter in an apartment, was asked if he is personally concerned about being discriminated against. He said that he felt that property owners have “a right to do as they see fit.”
Pop your popcorn, folks, and wait for this hypocrite to join his comrades soon on gayhomophobe.com, a site devoted to making sure the records of these hypocrites live on forever in cyberspace.
