There is a video circulating of mom in Baltimore slapping her son after catching him rioting and social media has gone crazy. People are calling the mom a “hero” and creating memes that make fun of the kid. My fellow white friends are gleefully sharing the video as if t is proof that the “thugs” in Baltimore are out of control because even their parents think so! Simmer down people, that isn’t what it means at all, it’s more likely his mother was afraid he would become the next Freddie Gray.
As you know by now Freddie Gray was the man whose death spurred the protests. Another black man killed while in police custody, something we have seen far too much of lately. The media immediately jumped into the fray when some people got unruly and started to riot. That’s what all of you have seen over the last three days on the news.
What you didn’t see was the peaceful protest on Saturday morning where more than 10,000 people marched through the streets. You didn’t see the people of all races coming together to chant “All night, all day, we will fight for Freddie Gray” and “The people united will never be defeated.”
Instead you saw the angry protests because the media loves to portray the black community as a bunch of lawless animals who can’t control themselves. It’s almost as if they are reporting in Alabama in the 1960s.
I have seen outrage from my white friends, many of them liberals like me. They have condemned the angry protestors, sharing videos of them smashing windows, and now of this mother. Up until now I haven’t said anything on the topic because it would likely fall of deaf ears. However, after three days of this utter nonsense I have to say this to every one of you who have shared a video, a meme, or an article condemning the people in Baltimore: You just don’t get it.
You don’t get it and you probably never will. Even I don’t really get it. Like me, you have never had to worry about whether or not reaching for your wallet is going to get you killed. You have never had you parents sit down and tell you that you have to be extra polite to police because you look threatening. You have never had a store clerk follow you around because the color of your skin makes the clerk think you are going to steal something. You have never been pulled over for driving while black. You have never been stopped on the street because the police didn’t think you belonged in a certain neighborhood. Your family has not endured 200 plus years of systematic racism and injustice. You don’t get it.
Before you whine and tell me that I am wrong, answer me this: Did you share an article or video of the 10,000 peaceful protestors? Probably not.
Are the people in Baltimore angry? Absolutely. Is this mom pissed because her son is rioting? She sure is and she is probably equally as terrified. Terrified that he is going to end up dead like so many of his peers.
