Family Of AR-15 Creator: He Would Be ‘Horrified’ It’s Being Sold To Civilians, It’s A Weapon Of War

In the wake of the Orlando massacre, the family of Eugene Stoner — the inventor of the AR-15 and M-16 assault-style rifles — has come forward to say he would never have intended that weapon for civilians. In fact, it was designed specifically for the military to use in defense of the AK-47.

Our father, Eugene Stoner, designed the AR-15 and subsequent M-16 as a military weapon to give our soldiers an advantage over the AK-47.

He died long before any mass shootings occurred. But, we do think he would have been horrified and sickened as anyone, if not more by these events.

The family, including Stoner’s children and grandchildren, requested anonymity in order to speak freely and openly about the subject. They are now coming forward for the first time in order to shed much-needed light on the intentions for the weapon.

Stoner designed the original AR-15 in his garage during the late 1950s. His family stated that he was “focused on making the most efficient and superior rifle possible for the military.” They stressed that it was “never intended for use by civilians.”

What has happened, good or bad, since his patents have expired is a result of our free market system,” Stoner’s family said. “Currently, a more interesting question is ‘Who now is benefiting from the manufacturing and sales of AR-15s, and for what uses?’

That’s a very good question. What is it’s purpose, other than to mow down over 100 people in a matter of minutes? The NRA and gun manufacturers claim that its use is specifically for “sporting and recreational” purposes. The NRA has even gone so far as to label it “America’s Rifle.” It’s certainly America’s mass shooter’s weapon of choice.

Jim Sullivan, co-creator of the AR-15, has also spoken out recently.

Everybody gets concerned when there’s one of these school issues where children are killed by an AR-15. I mean, that’s sickening. But that was never the intended purpose. Civilian sales was never the intended purpose.

Sandy Hook families are already in the process of suing Remington, a manufacturer of the AR-15. After what happened in Orlando, I can only hope that many other families will get involved in this suit and that the assault rifle and modified versions of it will once again be banned.
