Sean Hannity’s fanatical obsession with Donald Trump reached its final, inevitable stop. In a “joke” (hint: Nobody was laughing), Hannity laid out his fantasy for Obama after Trump’s victory in November. It’s one part racist, one part birther and entirely pathetic. This is your brain on Trump, folks. Festering and vile.
On his radio show, Hannity reacted to the news that President Obama was “working very hard to make sure that nobody has to leave the country as a result of an electoral outcome that the president doesn’t support,” according to his Press Secretary. In other words, Obama is busting his ass to make sure Hillary wins in November. This, naturally, set Hannity into a rage-spiral after the Fox News host willfully misunderstood the comment to mean President Obama was leaving the country if Trump wins.
From there, things got racist really quickly.
“I will charter Donald Trump’s plane if he’ll let me, and I will charter it to the country of your choice. You want to go to Canada? I’ll pay for you to go to Canada. You want to go to Kenya? I’ll pay for you to go to Kenya. Jakarta, where you went to school back in the day, you can go back there. Anywhere you want to go. I’m gonna — I’ll put the finest food, caviar, champagne, you name it. I have one stipulation: you can’t come back. That’s fair.”
Considering Hannity’s romance with the most well known birther of all time, his reference to Kenya speaks volumes. It’s been eight years and a long list of accomplishments, but many on the far right (including the man currently running for president) still pass around birther conspiracies and question Obama’s legitimacy. The idea that President Obama would want to live in exile in Kenya “where [he] went to school back in the day” is a pathetic attempt to pander to the people who buy into those very same birther conspiracies.
More troubling still, Hannity is tapping into another one of Trump’s unsettling obsessions: Vengeance. The candidate has made no secret of the fact that if elected, he plans to use the office as a blunt instrument to go after the political and personal enemies he’s made over the years. Already Trump has vowed to spend his first 100 days in office suing his sexual assault accusers and has explicitly stated that he will expand libel laws in order to destroy newspapers (particularly the New York Times) that publish negative things about him. In a stunning debate moment, Trump even swore he would throw Hillary Clinton behind bars if he’s elected – a level of political retribution unknown in the United States but common under fascist regimes.
So when Hannity “jokes” about exiling the former president to Africa, it’s okay to get a pit in your stomach. Under the sneer, there is a very real threat.
