Well, it didn’t take long for the racism deniers to come out of the woodwork and start blaming everything, except racism, for the mass murder of African-Americans by white supremacist, right-wing terrorist, Dylann Storm Roof.
The New York Times printed about a photo of the shooter:
His black jacket is adorned with two flags — one from apartheid-era South Africa, the other from white-ruled Rhodesia — that have been adopted as emblems by modern-day white supremacists.
It is reported that Roof said, “You rape our women and you’re taking over our country. And you have to go,” before firing upon his victims who included six women and three men.
However, the racism deniers took to their favorite news source’s Facebook page to voice their own theories on what motivated the domestic terrorist to enter the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church and kill nine people during a bible study. Fox News, of course, presented the story as a crime against Christianity – rather than a hate crime against African-Americans.
Their viewers ran with that idea and came up with some repulsive ideas that only illustrate the very real problem of racial divide that plagues our country – and always has.
The worst of the comments were those that actually blamed black people who have been standing up and demanding equality and the media coverage of it. If they would just sit down, shut up and stop stirring up things like “civil rights” and “equality” and “stop killing me because I’m black” and #blacklivesmatter – they wouldn’t be murdered???? What???
This guy seems to think that racists would never have black friends on social media. . . but, he likely also buys into the “I’m not racist, my brother’s, wife’s, best friend is black and she comes to Thanksgiving!” is proof enough that racism no longer exists.
He was joined by several people who blamed liberals and quickly assumed the shooter was actually a liberal. Because, if there is anything that screams liberalism, it’s owning guns, hating blacks, and snuffing out the lives of innocent people.
Clearly, these guys have no idea what liberal values are based.
Oh, and muslims. . .
Some felt the need to blame child protective services because clearly a lack of child abuse was a driving factor.
Several people actually bought the Fox News angle – that this was just another battle waged in the war against Christianity. Because, this was clear Christian persecution and had absolutely nothing to do with racism. This church wasn’t historic in the fight for civil rights or anything. . .
And, of course, there are those that just flat-out deny racism, one going as far as saying that the shooter was likely not a white guy, but Hispanic or “light-skinned black man.”
Denying that racism exists is extremely damaging. How can we ever progress if these are the thoughts when a very clear, very obvious act of hatred takes place and people can’t even see it for what it is?
Nine people lost their lives at the hands of an individual who saw them as less worthy of life because of their skin color. We cannot continue to deny that racism is a problem for our country. It is detrimental to us all.
