Judging by Bernie Sanders’ soaring popularity, it’s safe to assume that economic populism is sweeping the country. Some of the 2016 Republican clown car are starting to pay lip service to economic populism, which is like a deadbeat dad suddenly starting to care about his abandoned kids. But the fact remains that these Koch snorters would sooner push a poor single mom in front of a train than ever support policies that help lift people out of poverty. But life for the struggling classes in Uruguay is vastly different.
He may look like the lovable Mr Fredrickson character from UP, but Jose Mujica, the president of Uruguay, governs more like the pope. Moreover, Bernie Sanders in Spanish. Oozing humility and instant likability, President Mujica has quite a biography. For example, he’s been shot multiple times; spent years in prison for activism; has driven the same Volkswagen Beetle for decades; donates 90 percent of his $12k/month presidential salary to charity and he doesn’t even live in the presidential mansion. The populist president is obviously out of his mind. But seriously, this is a man who sounds slightly similar to 2016 Democratic Presidential Candidate Bernie Sanders.
“I have a way of life that I don’t change just because I’m president,” said Mujica in an interview with AJM.
