On Wednesday evening, Bill Maher hosted a special GOP Convention Edition of his HBO show Real Time. Joining him to talk about the Cleveland hate-fest were LGBT rights activist Dan Savage, MSNBC correspondent Joy Reid and filmmaker Michael Moore.
After some opening chatter about Ted Cruz’s performance, Maher comments that all conventions are about “tearing down the other side.” Then he asks the panel to weigh in on the hate they have seen at this convention. Savage observes that the hatred of Hillary Clinton we are seeing in Cleveland has made some Israeli columnists comment that it is akin to what was happening in Israel before a right-winger assassinated Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin during the Israeli election campaign in 1995.
“There was a delegate who said she [Clinton] should be shot for treason,” Maher notes.
Savage responds that it wasn’t a delegate who made the comment — it was a member of the Trump campaign.
Next, Maher lists the things Hillary has been blamed for at the convention: the Zika virus and Boko Haram (the Nigerian terrorist group) chief among them. And for good measure he throws in Ben Carson’s comment that she is somehow a fan of Lucifer.
Joy Reid comments that the chants of “Guilty! Guilty!” and “Lock her up” may have gone over well with the people who were there, “but outside of the room it sounded crazy.”
Then it’s Michael Moore’s turn. The filmmaker offers this sobering thought:
It might have sounded crazy to us, but to millions and millions of Americans, this was music to their ears. One of the things I’ve been concerned about this week, is we’ve been sitting in our bubble, having a good laugh at this total, as you said, ‘shit show,’ but the truth is that this plays to a lot of people that he has to win to become the next president … I’m sorry to be the buzzkill here so early on, but I think Trump is gonna win.
The audience reacts with boos, but Maher responds, “I’m glad you’re saying it. Everybody should say it. The enemy is complacency. Say it every day.”
Experts agree that Trump has a much more difficult path to the White House than does Clinton. But it’s not impossible. Vote blue!
