Trevor Noah was recently out of comission on “The Daily Show” due to an emergency appendectomy, and while he was gone he saw the ridiculous reality of the American healthcare system. Remember this whenever any Republican says we have “the greatest healthcare system in the world.” It is only the greatest if you have absurd amounts of money to access it.
Noah, being from South Africa, had experience with non-corporate hospitals and doctors. As you will see, the comparison to American hospitals is rather stark and embarrassing for America.
Trevor delivers a hilarious critique with his arrival:
Although I don’t know if ’emergency room’ is the right term, because they make you wait. I feel like there should be two rooms: one for emergencies and another for people who can fill out forms.
Before anyone would help him, the nurses insisted he fill out paperwork. Noah explained that he told the nurse he felt he maybe dying, because the pain was so intense. She still insisted he continue:
What more information do you need, other than the fact that I’m dying?
He then described how he was periodically fainting due to the pain, and the nurse actually tried to tell him to faint elsewhere:
You’re telling me where I can and cannot faint?
When they finally moved him, apparently to somewhere he was allowed to faint, they brought in MORE forms. You know, because when you can’t remain conscious, filling out forms is easy. These were to ask him how he was going to pay before they began making sure he didn’t die. He responded:
With my life, clearly.
In the end, Noah was treated and back to work in about a day. However, his experience really shines a light on the abject stupidity that is embedded in the American healthcare system. Here was a person suffering so badly that they couldn’t stay conscious, with a condition that could end up being life threatening if not treated promptly, and the most important thing to the hospital was having him fill out paperwork before saving his life. All because they were worried about overcharging him for services rendered.
