General Colin Powell was the poster child for the Republican Party party during the Bush administration. As Dubya’s Secretary of State, Powell’s main role was to garner support from the international community for the ousting of Saddam Hussein.
Powell says that over the past ten or 15 years that he has witnessed a turn to the hard right from his party, and that as a moderate on social issues and a minority, the GOP has little to offer him. Powell’s time frame puts the shift he speaks of smack dab in the middle of the Bush-era, which may have been why the general decided to endorse Barack Obama, both in 2008 and 2012.
Powell’s main beef with the party is its lack of willingness to appeal to minority voters — who, as he points out, will be the majority in the next 20 years.
In the end, Powell was smart enough to jump ship and shift support from the losing horse that is the Republican Party.
