It’s no secret that racial tensions have grown more and more volatile over the past 7 years.
This increase in division and animosity is largely due to the hateful rhetoric that has been generated by the Republican leadership in their despicable campaign to gin up their base and misdirect the anger of everyday, hard-working Americans. Directing it away from the corrupt corporations and billionaire class and towards the poor and disenfranchised, especially along economic, ethnic, and religious lines. Throw a dangerous demagogue like Donald Trump into the equation, and it’s no wonder we have had such a surge in race-related violence. The only real surprise is that we don’t see even more incidents of violence, as political figures like Trump, Cruz, and Palin use their willful ignorance to further divide people instead of working to unite an already fractured society.
This week at a rally in Philadelphia, tensions erupted between former President Bill Clinton and BLM Protesters during a speech Clinton gave in support of his wife’s bid for the Democratic nomination. In front of an already emotionally charged crowd, Clinton struggled to speak uninterrupted as protesters, carrying signs that read “Clinton’s crime bill destroyed our communities,” and, “Welfare reform increased poverty”, shouted admonitions and heckled Clinton repeatedly. The usually calm and well composed Clinton fired back angrily at protesters stating,
I don’t know how you would characterize the gang leaders who got 13-year-old kids hopped up on crack and sent them out onto the street to murder other African American children!
Clinton also went on to add,
Maybe you thought they were good citizens. She didn’t. You are defending the people who killed the lives you say matter.
In a country where ordinary citizens are constantly being pitted against each other based on issues of race, class, and religion by a corporate owned media that cares more about money and power than actually serving as a check and balance against the powerful elites, as intended, perhaps “We the People” should learn to actually stand together and demand our Democracy back before it’s too late.
