Trump Gives Military Families One Finger Salute By Eliminating Army Child Care Programs

Military families at two Army bases must now struggle to find child care thanks to President Donald Trump’s federal hiring freeze.

The Child Development Center (CDC) programs at U.S. Garrison Wiesbaden, Germany, and Fort Knox, Kentucky, notified military families last week that the government has suspended the child care program and that no new families will be enrolled. Families at the Fort Knox military base were notified on February 17, only ten days before the closure.

“Effective immediately, no new children will be enrolled in the CDC,” read a letter signed by the Fort Knox garrison commander, according to “Also, effective 27 February 2017, the CDC will no longer accommodate childcare for our hourly care and part day families until further notice.”

And military families in Germany were only given six days notice before the CDC shut its doors. In a letter released on Wednesday, military families were told that all part-day programs would be discontinued as of February 28.

“This closure is a result of staff shortage due to the Federal Hiring Freeze,” the letter says. “It is with deep regret that USAG Wiesbaden CYS must take this action.”

According to a report, child care programs comprised about half of the Army’s $1.1 billion annual budget designated for family programs.

On January 23, Trump signed an executive order freezing all federal government hiring, thereby fulfilling on of his presidential campaign promises. According to the Trump administration, the freeze will be lifted once the Office of Management and Budget drafts a “long-term plan to reduce the size of the Federal Government’s workforce through attrition.”

In the meantime, military families in Kentucky and Germany may be the first of many around the world to feel the impact of Trump’s ill-conceived federal hiring freeze as its effects continue to ripple throughout the federal government. But don’t expect the Trump administration to address this embarrassment anytime soon, out of fear that any remedy would make him look bad.

During his campaign, Trump promised military families that he would “build up” the military and start taking care of the men and women who keep America safe. However, we now see the latest result of what is bound to be one of many unintended consequences stemming from Trump’s now-legendary incompetent ignorance.

Stories like this are going to represent the new normal for the next four years unless the American people wake up and use their first opportunity to vote out Trump’s cowardly enablers.
