Two days ago, Trump fired the head of the Border Patrol. Tonight, he also got rid of the acting Attorney General and the director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. All three men and women had recently publicly stood in opposition to Trump’s policies and plans.
The purge has a name: The Monday Night Massacre.

It’s difficult to overstate just how insane this is.
In just days, Trump has fired the heads of both Border Patrol and ICE, two of the four largest federal law enforcement agencies.

Hours after news broke that Trump had fired Attorney General Sally Yates for refusing to enforce his illegal travel ban on Muslims and released a stunningly childish letter smearing Yates as “weak,” reporters learned that the acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Daniel Ragsdale was also out. Thomas Homan would replace him effective immediately. Why Homan? Here’s how the Washington Post described him last year:
Homan is the Washington bureaucrat in charge of rounding up, detaining and kicking illegal immigrants out of the country. As Americans fight over whether the next president should build a wall on the Mexico border to keep migrants out or protect millions of them from deportation, Homan is actually hunting undocumented immigrants down right now, setting strategy for 8,000 officers on the front lines.
He’s the man Trump wants to begin his immigrant round-ups. And Homan appears to take a perverse pleasure in it.
Border Patrol head Mark Morgan lost his job after publicly clashing with the “Border Patrol union” a conservative faction of Trump supporters who want to see the wall built. Gil Kerliokowske, a former commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, told the Washington Post that this was nothing short of a coup.
“The union supported this candidate for president, and now very much appears to be directing things – which is absolutely unheard of in law enforcement. The union used their influence to have him removed.’’
After already becoming the least popular new president in U.S. history, Trump appears to be purging the government of anyone who dares stand up to him and his cronies. As he continues to enact unlawful and unvetted edicts, circumventing both Congress and the judicial branch in the process, the fact that he is stocking the federal government with yes-men is a terrifying thing to behold.
