Shocking News: A Young Ted Cruz Smoked Pot, Like Nearly Everyone Else

According to MSNBC, a spokesperson for Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) told the Daily Mail Online that he smoked pot in his teen years.

When he was a teenager, he foolishly experimented with marijuana. It was a mistake, and he’s never tried it since.

I’m not sure which is worse, the fact that some Americans will genuinely be shocked by the news that their Tea Party golden boy could have possibly passed a joint in his younger days or that his campaign felt the need to respond to the Daily Mail Online with such defensiveness.

Dude, it’s okay. Calm down. Millions of other people hit the bong once or twice when they were teenagers, or young adults, or adult adults, or older adults, or seniors… okay, you get the point. It’s really not a big, bad, taboo thing. However, hello hypocrisy, anyone? As Raw Story points out, Cruz thinks cannabis users should be jailed for doing the very thing he has done. During his keynote speech at Texas Public Policy Foundation’s Policy Orientation in 2014  he said,

You could discuss commonsense changes that maybe should happen or shouldn’t happen. This president didn’t do that. He just said, ‘The laws say one thing’ — and mind you these are criminal laws, these are laws that say if you do ‘X, Y, and Z’ you will go to prison. The president announced, ‘No, you won’t.’

Surprisingly, I do agree with Cruz on one point – discussions do need to happen and the law does need changed. However, last I checked, the President doesn’t write the laws. Will Cruz take on the mission to change them? It is kind of his job and all. My bets are on doubtful, considering it’s far more important to try to repeal the Affordable Care Act 67 times in the House. Cruz may get another chance to vote on the repeal this year. Perhaps he will spark one up in celebration.

The Marijuana Policy Project produces an annual list of the “Top 50 Most Influential Marijuana Users” and again, no real surprise, Cruz has some company. I’d mention that perhaps our boy Teddy will be added in the future, but I would hate to assign dear Teddy to any list that names influential people, ever.

Here are the top 20:

  1. President Barack Obama
  2. Oprah Winfrey
  3. President Bill Clinton
  4. Associate Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas
  5. Stephen Colbert
  6. Jon Stewart
  7. Jay-Z

Isn’t it about time we end the prohibition on cannabis? We are talking about a something that has less risk associated with it than alcohol, yet is still considered a Schedule I substance, “the most dangerous drugs of all drugs” per the Drug Enforcement Administration, alongside things like heroin. Shocking news would be “Ted Cruz hit the crack pipe” – not news of him doing something in his youth that most people have done at least once in their life and is less harmful than having a beer on Sunday.
