SCOTUS Says Obamacare Subsidies Are Legal, And Foxbots Go Apesh*t (IMAGES)

That sound you heard a little while ago was the sound of several million Americans exhaling a sigh of relief at the same time. In a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court has ruled that Obamacare subsidies can continue for those in states that did not set up a state exchange. This should be the last chapter in Republicans’ insane war against the Affordable Care Act.

Justices Roberts and Kennedy joined the four liberals in affirming the decision of the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, and Roberts wrote the majority opinion. In that opinion, Roberts agrees that removing subsidies from those who purchase policies on the federal, as opposed to state, exchanges, would cause massive premium increases, and a resulting “death spiral” for Obamacare. In his conclusion he writes,

Congress passed the Affordable Care Act to improve health insurance markets, not to destroy them. If at all possible, we must interpret the Act in a way that is consistent with the former, and avoids the latter.

That’s it. Over and done. We won. The question now is, what happens on the right in response? Are Republicans in congress going to continue to repeal the ACA? The courts are no longer an option, so that’s the only avenue they have left. And that’s not an option, either, as long as President Obama wields the veto pen.

Fox News actually published a doctor’s opinion that said the court got the decision right. I hope you were sitting down when you read that. Are conservatives going to be turning off the “fair and balanced” network now, because they allowed someone to say on their website that upholding the law was a good thing?

Of course Twitter users had some not so kind things to say about the court’s ruling.

The National Review calls the decision “embarrassing.”

The “brilliant” Linda Suhler, Ph.D. misses the fact that if all the justices appointed by Republican presidents had voted against the law, her side would have won the day.

The comments from the knuckle draggers who inhabit the Fox News universe are coming in so fast it’s hard to screen capture them. Here’s a sampling.

Poor sad puppy, “QuantumOdyssey4.” And does anybody want to tell “the tide is turning” that his racism is showing?

“Brando5” forgets that it was his side who came up with the term “Obamacare.”

There’s the usual crying about being “sold out.”

And the “makers vs. takers” argument. Never mind the fact that those who receive Obamacare subsidies work. If they didn’t, they wouldn’t be getting the subsidies; they’d be on Medicaid. But since when did conservatives let facts get in the way of a clever comment?

How can we forget the “Obamacare is socialism” folks? They can’t explain how Obamacare is socialism, because they don’t understand Obamacare, and they don’t understand socialism. But it sounds good.

It’s amazing that so many people were actually rooting for millions to lose their health insurance subsidies, and with them, their health insurance. I suppose it shouldn’t be a surprise, since these people have been listening to the garbage they have been fed on a daily basis since the ACA was passed, and are still hearing from the GOP, and their favorite sources of “news.”

After failing in every single attempt to get rid of it, how much longer will it be before Republicans are claiming that Obamacare was actually their idea?
