Respected Journalist Dan Rather Absolutely DESTROYED Donald Trump

Dan Rather is arguably one of the best and most respected journalists in American history. He covered President Kennedy’s assassination, Watergate, President Nixon’s ensuing resignation, and just about every other huge news event over the last five decades. Eventually, millions of Americans tuned in to watch him anchor CBS Evening News and 60 Minutes, he is, without a doubt, an American icon — especially for those of us in the media. Now, this icon has set his sights on Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

On Tuesday, Trump held a news conference which he said was to discuss the money his campaign had raised for veteran’s groups, but instead, he used it as an opportunity to bash the press. This decision to attack the media is what led Dan Rather to post a long condemnation of the Republican on Facebook:

I felt a shudder down my spine yesterday watching Donald Trump’s fusilade against the press. This is not a moment to be trifled with. It wasn’t his first tirade and it won’t be his last.

I was reminded of my college journalism professor, the late Hugh Cunningham, who would exhort his young charges in a thundering voice to ‘never let them scare you.’ It was his most important lesson. One of Edward R. Murrow’s favorite words was ‘steady.’ That also bears repeating today.

Trump hates the press and the reason he hates them is because it is their job to vet him. It is their job to expose the REAL Donald Trump to voters that they are as informed as they possibly can be when they go to the polls in November. Trump, though, wants his supporters to believe that the press is out to get him because that delegitimizes them. And in addition to slamming them to his supporters, he also threatens journalists for telling the truth.

Freedom of the press is a vital element in maintaining our freedom as a nation and Trump wants to destroy that. That terrifies Rather and it should also scare the hell out of the rest of us.
