Republicans and even a few cowardly Democrats have been igniting fires of fear, panic, and hatred towards Middle Easterners – particularly Syrian refugees – for weeks now. They keep wanting to paint these poor people as ISIS in disguise, suggesting they are all laying in wait to conduct some huge act of terrorism and destroy America. The problem with that is, it has been proven yet again to be wildly inaccurate.
A new report from the Center on National Security at Fordham University shows that about 80 percent of the ISIS suspects currently in America are U.S. Born Citizens. Exactly ZERO of them are from Syria.
The breakdown goes like this: 68 people were indicted for some level of involvement with ISIS. 55 were U.S. citizens. 44 of them were born in the United States. The other nations of birth were Sudan, Iran, Palestine, Bosnia, Cuba, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Yemen, Somalia, Ghana, and Kosovo. Zero of these people were from Syria and only 3 were classified as a refugee from any of these nations.
Let’s face it, Republicans and other freakin’ cowards that go along with them have no clue what they are talking about when it comes to the refugee crisis. They keep scapegoating these people as if they are the source of ISIS and they simply are not. ISIS does not care about the United States as much as Republicans want us to think. They want their own state in the Middle East, and they are not deploying forces here to take over America.
ISIS’s tactic for foreign terror is not to send agents into a country. They encourage people already in other nations, via social media, to radicalize and conduct operations on their behalf as a proxy terrorist. If you believed Republicans, they would make you think there is a massive fleet of ISIS ships currently waiting outside of the New Jersey shore with a label on them reading “Syrian refugees”.
One very relevant example of ISIS in America is Christopher Lee Cornell. He was a regular white American kid from Ohio, who was a 9/11 truther and felt very disillusioned with his nation and government. He latched onto the ISIS rhetoric and was posting to social media, supporting them and praising the radical terrorist Anwar Awlaki, who was killed in a U.S. drone attack in 2011.
Cornell planned to detonate bombs at the U.S. Capitol, to attack lawmakers who he considered to be “enemies”. He also planned on waiting at the building to shoot people fleeing from the area after the bombs detonated.
Cornell was apprehended with 2 semi-automatic rifles and 600 rounds of ammunition he bought from an Ohio store while he was in his final preparation for traveling to Washington D.C.
The bottom line here is that Republicans need to stop with all the fear mongering. Remember that we are the “home of the brave”, not the cowardly. Every time they enable xenophobia they help put us all at risk.
