Rep. Elijah Cummings is one of the best at stomping on right-wing talking points that evade reality. Long may his leadership in the House of Representatives reign, because without him there, we’d be hosed.
Thursday, was the day that former Secretary Hillary Clinton appeared before yet another Benghazi select committee to discuss more of these “emails” and the same things ad nauseam we’ve discussed in the many hearings that have come before.
Today was different, but not because of any win by the GOP. This latest hearing comes after Benghazi Committee chair Rep. Kevin McCarthy admitted that all of these committee hearings have been an attempt to bring down Clinton’s poll numbers in her bid for president. It makes, what Rep. Trey Gowdy has called, an “impossible task.” Impossible, he says, presumably because the political climate is such that it isn’t possible to really get what he wants out of the hearing. Realistically, there’s nothing to get.
That was Rep. Elijah Cummings take today:
The Republican Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee conducted an extensive, bipartisan, two-year investigation and issued a detailed report. The Senate Intelligence Committee and the Senate Homeland Security Committee also conducted bipartisan investigations.
Those bipartisan efforts respected and honored the memories of the four brave Americans who were killed in Benghazi: Ambassador Chris Stevens, Sean Smith, Tyrone Woods, and Glen Doherty.
The problem is that Speaker Boehner did not like the answers he got from those investigations. So he set up this new Select Committee—with no rules, no deadline, and an unlimited budget—and he set it loose on Secretary Clinton because she is running for president.
Clearly, it is possible to conduct a serious, bipartisan investigation. What is impossible is for any reasonable person to continue denying that Republicans are squandering millions of taxpayer dollars on this abusive effort to derail Secretary Clinton’s presidential campaign.
There it is. The hard cold reality of this one-sided fraud of government the GOP is running in Congress. The partisan hacks in the Congressional leadership want nothing more than to use their positions to legislate electoral outcomes. The dishonest attempts to find a smoking gun, that doesn’t exist, is another nail in the GOP’s coffin.
These vile leaders have taken an honest institution that seeks to help our great country and turned it into a joke. America deserves better. America deserves leaders who put truth ahead of partisanship, honor before politics and dignity before cheap shots that increase fundraising dollars. Yet another reason to vote for Democrats next November.
