It’s been a joke among liberals for decades that conservatives are knuckledragging cavemen, pounding their chests in patriotic fervor and flinging poop at whatever scares them.
Apparently, Jane Goodall, the world famous scientist of all things ape-related, agrees. In an interview with James Fallow of The Atlantic, Goodall compares Trump to, literally, a screeching chimpanzee:
“In many ways the performances of Donald Trump remind me of male chimpanzees and their dominance rituals,” Jane Goodall, the anthropologist, told me shortly before Trump won the GOP nomination. “In order to impress rivals, males seeking to rise in the dominance hierarchy perform spectacular displays: stamping, slapping the ground, dragging branches, throwing rocks. The more vigorous and imaginative the display, the faster the individual is likely to rise in the hierarchy, and the longer he is likely to maintain that position.”
If you haven’t noticed, Trump is ALL about dominating people. His belittling nicknames, his schoolyard insults and his demands that everything be on his terms are all ways of announcing he’s the alpha male.
And his followers eat it up like candy because they’ve surrendered any pretense of being responsible citizens. They don’t want to be governed by adults, they want to be ruled by a strongman that promises to make the scary things giving them nightmares go away. This is precisely why they love tyrants like Putin even though he’s driven his country’s economy into the ground: He projects strength and the illusion is all they crave, if not the real thing.
Trump, of course, is perfectly suited to appeal to conservatives because he’s all Id and self-aggrandizement. His lies are part of his mystique to his supporters. He’s so powerful, they think, he makes his own reality; his own truth (the Bush administration tried this and failed). He doesn’t care about what other people say, he just does what he wants. The more he pounds his chest and the louder he shrieks, the more he dazzles his base and the more submissive they become.
Can Trump bluster and bully his way through the personification of willpower that is Hillary Clinton? We’ll find out soon enough.
