White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer serves as President Donald Trump’s main mouthpiece. His bitter relationship with mainstream news outlets who refuse to tow the Trump line is evident in at every press briefing. And, so far no comedian has managed to capture Spicer’s hostile, incompetent absurdity, that is until Saturday night.
Melissa McCarthy, one of the fastest rising comedic talents in Hollywood, took on the role of playing the contentious press secretary and totally nailed what’s being called one of the best performances in Saturday Night Live‘s history.
McCarthy managed to perfectly nail the 45-year-old former Republican National Committee communications director perfectly, and she did so with the type of flair and improvisation that so many other legendary comedians like Jim Belushi, Eddie Murphy, and Chris Farley used to bring to the show. Her delivery will be talked about for years to come and on can be sure that this won’t be the last time we’ll be seeing her play Trump’s angry and incompetent press secretary.
Here’s McCarthy at her best as Sean Spicer.
Like Trump’s former campaign manager and current senior adviser Kellyanne Conway, Spicer has a talent for using the Trump administration’s “alternate facts” to counter all real facts he’s confronted with by the media. And sadly so many Americans only trust information coming from pro-Trump personalities and media outlets like Fox News and Breitbart. That fact makes people like Spicer more dangerous than ever, as his lies and mischaracterizations contribute to the growing deep divisions in American society.
It’s good that we can all laugh at fools like Spicer. However, it’s important to keep in mind that most Americans laughed at Trump for a very long time but when the time came to take action, they didn’t show up to the polls where and when it counted the most. We must never again lose sight of how dangerous fools can be in American politics, even those who seem too outrageous to be taken seriously.
