Texas Rep. Louie Gohmert always seems to have something stupid to say and Friday’s speech at the Values Voter Summit was no exception. Gohmert never worries about evidence, never needs a source or to be able to back up his claims. When Louie Gohmert finds himself in front of a microphone he just follows his gut. He just opens his mouth and the nasty came spewing out (once he quoted Jesus, of course):
“You don’t make fun of people who are impaired, have special needs, and whether you like her or not, Hillary Clinton has made clear that she is mentally impaired and this is not somebody you should be making fun of.”
Aside from the dangling participle, that comment is packed to the gills with sexism and ableism. Not that Louie is particularly able, his own self. To say that Gohmert isn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer is to disparage butter knives. But, for him to say that Hillary is “impaired” or has “special needs,” is to invoke generations of misogyny in a dog whistle of sexism with a touch of ageism to boot.
The idea that Hillary Clinton has some sort of disease or disorder has been promoted very strongly by the right recently. They even have their very own conservative group of doctors to back them up. Rudy Giuliani — speaking as a Trump surrogate — has made it a point to
concern troll bring up Clinton’s health, calling it a “public service.”
So it’s no surprise that Gohmert, ever the conservative lap dog, would say such things to a room full of people so radical they make Bill O’Reilly look reasonable. After waiting for the laughter to die down from his previous “joke,” Gohmert continued:
“I get the impression that in law school and along the way, she’s been very, very smart, but I don’t know, maybe it was the concussion, the fall back when she did, or maybe, who knows? They won’t tell us what really is going on with her.”
Did I mention that the crowd who attend the Values Voter Summit have a few conspiracy theorists skulking around? They love those conspiracy theories. Especially when they have to do with Hillary. This theory being floated, that Hillary is somehow debilitated by the fall she took a few years ago, was started by none other than former Bushite and canned ham impersonator Karl Rove. The Trump campaign and the right in general has been more than happy to resurrect it.
Gohmert had more to say, poking fun at the idea of some of Clinton’s Blackberry devices being smashed by aides and that, maybe, one of them accidentally hit Hillary. But he’s just joshing, dontcha know. We really ought to have pity on the poor gal.
“I don’t know, but we need to be praying for Hillary Clinton, there’s special needs there, there’s mental impairment. I mean seriously, she can’t remember.”
She can’t remember. Coming from Louie Gohmert, that is quite a hoot. I bet we remember the time Gohmert forgot what asparagus is. Or isn’t. Okay, maybe his misspoke. After all, he was pretty mad at Eric Holder, who had trolled him epically. But he then tried to say it wasn’t a mistake. No, really. Hey, it’s okay Louie. We were just having a bit of fun with you.
Unfortunately, Gohmert was not just having a bit of fun when he cruelly and purposefully disparaged the disabled and women both in one fell swoop. All to feed a ridiculous gossip campaign against the Democratic candidate, a woman he doesn’t like. A campaign that represents pretty much all the right has left with which to try to attack Hillary Clinton. Benghazi failed. The email scandal isn’t. The Clinton Foundation is clean. So they go for her health, and her age and gender along with it.
And they wonder why we think many of them are deplorable.
