Liberal Nation: For The First Time Social Liberals Surpass Social Conservatives (IMAGES)

You would have to be living under a rock not to notice how liberal America has become in recent years. We elected President Obama with more than fifty percent of the popular vote, not once but twice. Society no longer deems racism and homophobia acceptable, and we have passed marriage equality laws in more than half of our states. We elected the first black president in history, twice and there is a good chance that a woman may become president in 2016. According to a new Gallup poll, social liberals in the Democratic Party have surpassed social conservatives. That’s not all; it is also the first time since Gallup started polling Americans, that just as many identify themselves as liberals as the people identifying as conservatives.

In 1999, Gallup started asking Americans to identify themselves politically. In the first poll they took only 21 percent of those polled considered themselves socially liberal; by comparison, 39 percent thought of themselves as conservatives. Over the next decade the numbers didn’t fluctuate much, but in 2009 the number of conservative Americans started to drop. At about the same time, the number of self identified liberals started to rise until this year when both groups are at 31 percent.

If you look at the graph you’ll notice that while both groups are at the same percentage, if this trend continues it is entirely possible and even probable that as a whole, social liberals will outnumber social conservatives. Within the Democratic Party that has already begun.

When the Democratic Party was polled by Gallup in 2001, 43 percent of our party considered themselves held moderate views , 35 liberal and  20 percent conservative; this year the numbers are 31 percent, 53 percent and 14 percent respectively.

We’ve been saying for a long time that Republicans’ resistance to change is what will kill their party. Their base is made up of really old, really white guys who discriminate against everyone. As one of my colleagues said: the Republican Party is literally dying before our very eyes.

Republicans aren’t just really old, they’re also really white. America is diversifying, but you wouldn’t know it by attending the 2016 Republican National Convention. The Grand Old Party has become the textbook definition of putting all your eggs in one basket. If they lose the only real demographic they appeal to – older white conservatives – they have nobody else that wants anything to do with them.[Source]

They are killing their party with their bigotry and they don’t even realize it. If the GOP continues to alienate voters – in order to appease their base – America is going to be a liberal nation in no time.
