GOP CIVIL WAR BEGINS: Anti-Trump Republican Evan McMullin Launches Independent Presidential Bid

Evan McMullin is the chief policy director for the GOP in the U.S. House of Representatives. He’s also one of many establishment Republicans who has had enough of their Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump dragging their party further into obscurity.

So McMullin has decided to launch an independent conservative campaign for president.

In a year where Americans have lost faith in the candidates of both major parties, it’s time for a generation of new leadership to step up,” McMullin said in a statement to ABC News. “It’s never too late to do the right thing, and America deserves much better than either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton can offer us. I humbly offer myself as a leader who can give millions of disaffected Americans a conservative choice for President.

MSNBC host Joe Scarborough, citing “multiple sources,” was the first to announce McMullin’s bid on Twitter in a series of posts.

The host said that McMullin plans to kick off his campaign on Monday and will have “the backing of key $$ contributors in the Republican party.”

Buzzfeed also reported McMullin’s independent bid while citing their own unnamed sources.

On Monday, a fundraising website was launched soliciting campaign donations for “Evan McMullin for President.”

According to his LinkedIn page, for 11 years McMullin worked as an operations officer for the CIA from 1999 to 2010. In 2011, he earned an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, which also happens to be Trump’s alma mater.

McMullin also worked as a volunteer refugee resettlement officer for the United Nations, for Goldman Sachs, and as a deckhand on an Alaskan commercial fishing boat.

An aide for the House Republican Conference confirmed that McMullin was no longer employed there. However, Conference spokesperson Nate Hodson stated: “The House Republican Conference has zero knowledge of his intentions.”

McMullin’s personal Twitter is filled with posts opposing Trump, characterizing the billionaire as an authoritarian and challenging the GOP nominee to release his tax returns.

Authoritarians like @realDonaldTrump use promises of law & order to justify infringing on civil rights as they consolidate control by force,” McMullin tweeted on July 21, his most recent post.

“Opposing @realDonaldTrump is about putting principle over power, a virtue some in Washington are too quick to abandon. #NeverTrump,” he wrote on May 7, just days after Trump became the GOP’s presumptive nominee.

While McMullin isn’t the first Republican to consider mounting a third-party challenge against Trump, he appears to be the first with the guts to act on it.

The GOP nominee has yet to comment on his new rival, but hopefully, Trump’s new Twitter playmate will keep him entertained and distracted from less important things, like running for president.
