Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi has poured her heart and soul into making sure gay and lesbian couples in her state are refused the right to marry. Justice Clarence Thomas on Friday put a serious wrench in her bigoted works by denying a stay preventing the state from recognizing same-sec marriage.
“The application for stay presented to Justice Thomas and by him referred to the Court is denied,” the Supreme Court said in a statement Friday evening. Same-sex marriage in Florida will become officially recognized as of January 6, 2015.
In her own statement Friday night, Attorney General Bondi said:
Tonight, the United States Supreme Court denied the State’s request for a stay in the case before the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals. Regardless of the ruling, it has always been our goal to have uniformity throughout Florida until the final resolution of the numerous challenges to the voter-approved constitutional amendment on marriage. Nonetheless, the Supreme Court has now spoken, and the stay will end on Jan.5.
The numerous challenges? The only challenge is for bigoted Republican officials to step out of the way and allow equality to happen unimpeded.
Bondi’s goal of “uniformity” is nothing but a veiled attempt to deny what she considers an attack on the sanctity of marriage to as many people as possible based on her religious and/or political beliefs.
In the lawsuit she filed with the 11th District Court of Appeals, Bondi said:
the promotion of family continuity and stability is a legitimate state interest.Florida’s marriage laws, then, have a close, direct, and rational relationship to society’s legitimate interest in increasing the likelihood that children will be born to and raised by the mothers and fathers who produced them in stable and enduring family units.
Like most Republican ideologies, Bondi made it clear that it’s all about the children. It’s always all about the children unless the issue is keeping guns out of their hands, then it’s all about liberty and freedom. Everyone knows only gun-toting monotheistic bigots are allowed complete freedom in red states.
Pam Bondi is no stranger to the sanctity of marriage. She has twice stood and vowed to love, honor and cherish her partner until death do they part. Both marriages ended in divorce, and a third was called off just short of the ceremony.
Human Rights Campaign, putting the issue of Bondi and marriage into perspective, said in an article:
Now we’re not suggesting that Bondi is somehow a bad person because of her relationship difficulties. Quite the contrary – she has every right to marry and divorce as many times as it takes for her to find the right person.
But the problem is, not everyone in her state does have that right. And it is incredibly hypocritical for her to fight tooth and nail to keep gay and lesbian Floridians from marrying – OR DIVORCING! Lest we forget the state’s ban on marriage equality also forbids the state from allowing couples who married in other jurisdictions to divorce in Florida.
That’s what equality is all about, Pam. Your rights, our rights, everyone’s rights should be the same under the law. If you oppose same-sex marriage, don’t marry someone of the same sex.
Yes, it really is that simple.
