For a person who insists that he “tells it like it is” and proclaims his honesty with every other breath, it should alarm Donald Trump’s minions that he simply refuses to release even one year’s worth of tax returns or even say what his tax rate is. The presumptive Republican nominee appeared on Good Morning America Thursday morning, but when host George Stephanopoulos asked Trump what his tax rate was, he had an answer that should enrage Americans:
It’s none of your business. You’ll see it when I release but I fight very hard to pay as little tax as possible.
Gee, it’s almost like he’s trying to hide something. Like an effective tax rate in the low single digits, perhaps? Trump is, after all, a billionaire and billionaires don’t pay taxes; they just whine about the “excessive” taxes they’re “forced” to pay.
And just to make it clear that we peasants aren’t worthy to see the tax returns of the Mighty Trump:
Stephanopoulos asked Trump: “Yes or no, do you believe voters have a right to see your tax returns before they make a final decision?”
Bulllllshit. If Trump wins the election, we will NEVER see those returns. His claim that he “can’t” show them until after his IRS audit is done is bullshit, as well. They’re his tax returns and the IRS couldn’t stop him from making them public even if they wanted to. I’m sure he’ll have a brand new excuse ready if his audit is finished before November anyway.
Trump, like most of the 1%, has perfected the art of evaded taxes and depriving the American people of our fair share of the money he makes from our labor and resources. But letting his mindless followers know that would be disastrous. Trump’s been telling them that Those People have made their lives difficult instead of the rich parasites that have destroyed the lives of millions. It just won’t do for people to realize that Trump himself is one of those parasites and he’s only pretending to care about their lives.
Just to make the whole spectacle even sadder, Trump has started using one of the extreme left’s talking points as camouflage:
I sort of have to laugh when Clinton says it, Mrs. Clinton said I should give my tax returns. What about all the e-mails or missing Goldman Sachs speeches?” Trump said.
How the corporate media handles this will tell us a lot about how they will treat the candidates. If Hillary refused to release hers, it would be the greatest scandal of all time and disqualify her from being president. This is not a question. It’s a fact. By way of comparison, Bernie Sanders got a pass for releasing just one year’s tax return. Should the “liberal” media let Trump slide on not releasing any at all, it will signal that they’re going to handle Trump with kid’s gloves throughout the entire election and that’s a dangerous precedent to set.
If they have even the slightest intention of appearing nonpartisan, the press should rake Trump over the coals nonstop until he releases his tax returns. If he can’t manage even that level of transparency, he has no business running for president.
