D.C. Mayor Bites Her Thumb At Congressional Marijuana Block, Legalizes It Anyway

Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) doesn’t give a d*mn; she’s not listening to the starched collars in Congress, she’s listening to the people. As of Thursday, Bowser is legalizing marijuana in the face of congressional static, just like voters said they wanted.

Bowser stated at a press conference:

We know that the residents of the District of Columbia spoke loud and clear last November 4th when they adopted initiative 71 to legalize small amounts of marijuana in the District of Columbia and our government is prepared to implement and enforce initiative 71.

You have to love a politician like that. After all, if they are not listening to constituents, one has to wonder to whom they are  listening.

The nation’s capital will put initiative 71 into action as of 12:01 a.m., Thursday morning. It legalizes citizens of D.C. to be in possession of up to two ounces of marijuana. Sale and consumption of the substance in public is intended to remain illegal, however.

Be that as it may, conservatives in Congress are still trying to do their best to stand in the way of the people’s vote, however, maintaining the position that putting initiative 71 into play will violate Congress’s December block on the issue, which bars use of any money enacting the measure. What it would cost to simply allow people to start smoking marijuana without arresting them is anyone’s guess.

House Oversight Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) and Rep. Mark Meadows (R. N.C.) stated in a letter Wednesday to Bowser:

If you decide to move forward with the legalization of marijuana in the District, you will be doing so in knowing and willful violation of the law.

Right – a law these jerk*ffs passed after the people voted to make smoking marijuana legal. Where is the conservative outcry over “big government” overreach stepping in to circumvent the local vote of the people? We’ve got two federal yahoos who live in Utah and North Carolina trying to block how locals choose to live in their own community of Washington, D.C., yet – surprise, surprise – the very hypocritical government officials stepping in to do what conservatives are always crying wolf that liberals are doing happen to be (duhn, duhn, DUHN) members of the Republican Party.

Thankfully, Bowser is sticking to her guns, stating at a press conference that Chaffetz misses the point: his constituents expect the government to listen to the will of the people, not bully its own will onto the people.

It’s easy to see why Chaffetz is so confused, though. Government has been working bassackwards for a long time now.
