Dan Savage, a nationally syndicated author and LGBT activist, sat down with Stephen Colbert to explain why he trusts Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump.
I think Trump is a dangerous demagogue and a racist and will be bad for queer people, bad for all Americans if he gets elected.
Seems like a no-brainer, really, especially if you love someone in the LGBT+ community, but it isn’t. Donald Trump is a marketer, you know, like a smarmy used car salesman, and has said some things that make him appear less “bad” for LGBT+ people. The fact is, he is a dangerous menace to every societal advance we have made since the 1930s. Not just LGBT people, but basically all civil rights issues.
On Trump’s “popularity,” which has been framed as if he is truly overwhelmingly accepted by many Americans, Savage made it clear, he is popular with half of conservatives but we can not extrapolate that out to the rest of the American people. However, since conservatives tend to vote more than liberals, this should worry us.
Trump is a mixed bag for LGBT people, if you can call the possibility of losing the right to marry mixed. Hillary Clinton, however, who was not alway a good bet on LGBT issues, is now a sure bet for them, “excellent, actually” according to Savage.
She wasn’t always good on gay marriage, but neither was Barack Obama. When you go to somebody, when you go to a politician and say ‘please change your mind,’ when they change their mind you don’t then spend the rest of their lives saying “F— you for not changing your mind sooner!” You say: welcome to the right side of this issue, we’re glad to have you.”
