Bush Takes One Look At RNC’s Trump Trainwreck: I’m Worried I’m ‘The Last Republican President’

With the GOP’s insistence on continuing to fight culture wars they’ve clearly lost, perpetuating anti-science nonsense, and courting ignorance, they were already doing a pretty good job of destroying themselves and any future they might have. However, Trump has clearly put the final nail in the coffin of what used to be the Party of Lincoln. One look at the embarrassing, chaotic mess that is the Republican National Convention proves that. It’s so bad that even within the party there are some who worry that this is it. This is the end. There will never be another Republican president now that the Trump Train has mowed down the party. And one such voice is coming from a rather surprising (or maybe not so surprising) source: Former President George W. Bush.

Bush told Politico Magazine the following:

In a more intimate moment during the reunion, surrounded by a smaller clutch of former aides and advisers, Bush weighed in with an assessment so foreboding that some who relayed it could not discern if it was gallows humor or blunt realpolitik.

“I’m worried that I will be the last Republican president.”

This is unprecedented. The last Republican president is openly admitting the current nominee will destroy the party. Wow.

The Bush family seems to have completely lost faith in the RNC’s ability to run the party, or to control Trump’s controversy-riddled campaign. It’s a complete circus, on display for the entire world to watch and mock.

The first day of the RNC was a hotbed of chaos, with the #NeverTrump delegates staging a convention floor fight during a time when the party brass are trying to sell the nation the lie that the GOP is as united as ever. Then, there’s the fact that the second day has had nothing but headlines criticizing Melania Trump’s big headliner speech, because it was clearly plagiarized from Michelle Obama’s 2008 Democratic National Convention speech.

The thing is, Americans can’t possibly be stupid enough to elect Trump. No matter how many times Paul Ryan – who has basically admitted that he’s only supporting Trump because he feels he has no choice – touts the idea that Trump is better than Hillary, people are seeing, more and more, that this just isn’t true. Trump isn’t just embarrassing. He’s dangerously incompetent. That’s why Republican political dynasties like the Bush clan aren’t supporting him. Make no mistake – the former president is correct. Trump has effectively killed the GOP, and we’re all witnessing its slow, agonizing death.
