Earlier this morning, Donald Trump had one of his colossal meltdowns over the claim that he had insulted the widow of US. Army Sgt. La David Johnson.
Democratic Congresswoman Frederica Wilson stated that Trump told the widow of Johnson, a Green Beret who was killed during an ISIS ambush in Niger, that Johnson “knew what he signed up for.”
Trump tried to claim it was a lie in a Twitter tantrum when he posted this:
Democratic Congresswoman totally fabricated what I said to the wife of a soldier who died in action (and I have proof). Sad!”
And of course, Trump’s exhausted, overworked team was forced to come to his rescue. Unfortunately for Trump, that didn’t work out too well for him today. In today’s press briefing, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders was asked about Trump’s tweet, with ABC’s Cecilia Vega inquiring about the “proof” Trump has about his call to the grieving widow. Vega asked if there were any recordings of the phone call, and Huckabee Sanders admitted that there were not. Huckabee Sanders said:
No, but there were several people in the room from the administration that were on the call, including… General John Kelly.”
Things are not looking good for the Trump administration. Not only have Congresswoman Wilson’s claims been backed up by Sgt. La David Johnson‘s mother, but since there are no recordings, there is very little chance that anyone will take the account of the Trump administration seriously. Clearly, none of those “several people” who heard this call can be trusted.
Trump’s tweet this morning implied that he had some concrete evidence to defend himself with. But just like his any other time he’s tried to defend himself, this backfired on him – and it’s thanks to his own team!
