The White House is pretty much in shambles right now.
Over the last several days, there have been reports that Trump’s two top advisers, son-in-law Jared Kushner and former Breitbart CEO Steve Bannon, have been viciously fighting and competing for Trump’s attention. There have also been rumors that Bannon, who now serves as Trump’s chief strategist, might be getting demoted by Trump – another major blow considering he was just booted from his position in the National Security Council.
According to a bizarre interview with The Wall Street Journal, Trump is apparently making things worse (as usual). During the interview, Trump weighed in on the unprecedented infighting we’re currently witnessing in the Trump administration. While there have been reports that Bannon wanted to “work things out” and might even be willing to accept a smaller role in Trump’s administration, Trump might feel very differently now. In the interview, Trump had this to say about his top adviser:
Mr. Trump said recent reports of infighting among his senior staff—particularly chief strategist Steve Bannon and son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner—were “overblown.” But he referred to Mr. Bannon as “a guy who works for me” and noted that he, Mr. Trump, was his own “strategist.”
This reference to Bannon as merely “a guy who works for me” is a far cry from the tone in the beginning of his presidency, when Trump and Bannon seemed like two peas in a pod. Trump had praised Bannon so much that there was speculation that Bannon was actually in charge and Trump was merely his puppet.
These comments seem even worse when you consider that Trump also recently said:
“I like Steve, but you have to remember he was not involved in my campaign until very late. I had already beaten all the senators and all the governors, and I didn’t know Steve. I’m my own strategist and it wasn’t like I was going to change strategies because I was facing crooked Hillary.”
It certainly seems that Trump considers Bannon totally dispensable and might already be planning his removal.
