For six months, Donald Trump’s scandal-ridden White House has paralyzed business in Washington and roiled an already bitterly divided nation. Each day, there seems to be new revelations regarding the Trump crime family and their travesty of a so-called administration. This week, all eyes have been on Donald Trump Jr., as it has come to light that he met with a shady Russian lawyer in order to collect dirt on Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. After repeatedly telling lies regarding the nature of the meeting, Trump Jr. was finally forced to release emails that are almost cartoonishly incriminating. As if that weren’t bad enough, the week ended with the greatest reveal yet: That there was a former Soviet intelligence officer in the meeting along with Trump Jr., former campaign manager Paul Manafort, and Trump Sr.’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.
Well, it seems that House Democrats have had enough of their GOP colleagues’ refusal to act on this criminal enterprise that is currently occupying the Executive Branch of our government. On Friday, two members of the House Democratic Caucus took to the floor of the House of Representatives in order to shame Republicans and to highlight Trump Jr.’s clearly criminal activity. Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) declared that the email chain between Trump Jr. and the Russians is a “smoking gun.” He said:
Don Jr.’s emails are a smoking gun. They prove that the Trump campaign was not only aware of the Russian government’s efforts to meddle in our elections, they were enthusiastic about accepting Russian support.”
Rep. Gallego went on to say that this email chain showed the American people “a disturbing picture of a campaign, and now an administration, willing to break the law and sell out to an adversary of the United States in order to advance their own petty interests.”
Rep. Gallego was joined by Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) in this endeavor. They also had blown up copies of Trump Jr.’s now-infamous TIME cover, in which the magazine said he was caught red-handed.
Now, this is a great try, but this also assumes that Republicans can actually feel shame or have the capacity to actually care about their country more than they do their party and political power (hint: they don’t). To that end, it will likely fall on deaf ears, and give the GOP Trumpkins more “evidence” that the entire endeavor is a “witch hunt.”
Either way, I love these guys for trying, and for exposing the House Republicans for the craven cowards that they are.
