Pete Hoekstra, Donald Trump’s Ambassador to the Netherlands, was caught on Dutch TV in a blatant lie when he tried to label past racist statements he made about Muslims in the Netherlands as “fake news.”
Dutch reporter Wouter Zwart was interviewing the ambassador when he asked Hoekstra about remarks he’d made in 2015 accusing Dutch Muslims of setting fire to politicians and establishing “no-go zones” prohibiting police from entering specific areas within Dutch cities.
However, when confronted, Hoekstra flatly denied making any such statement.
“I didn’t say that, that is actually an incorrect statement,” Hoesktra insisted. “We would call it fake news. I never said that.”
Unfortunately for Hoekstra, Zwart had the video of the ambassador making the remarks at his fingertips and the reporter was more than happy to play it for the absent-minded American ambassador.
In the video Hoekstra said:
“In the Netherlands, there are cars being burned, there are politicians that are being burned… and yes, there are no-go zones in the Netherlands.”
After having his memory jogged, Hoekstra struggled to explain himself after being busted.
“You called it ‘fake news,’” the reporter pointed out.
“I didn’t call that fake news,” Hoekstra defensively replied. “I didn’t use those words today… I don’t think I did.”
This embarrassment is just another example of how Trump’s “best of the best” unqualified lackeys are making fools out of the U.S. and setting back diplomatic relations with even our most reliable allies. Trump’s promotion of racism and xenophobia may have helped him win an election, but now we are starting to see the bill come due with regards to how the rest of the world decides to deal with the current U.S. administration.
Just this week the United Nations overwhelmingly voted to condemn Trump’s inflammatory decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, even after the US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley threatened retaliation against the organization.
“The United States will remember this day in which it was singled out for attack in this assembly,” Haley said. “We will remember it when we are called upon to once again make the world’s largest contribution” to the UN and when other member nations ask Washington “to pay even more and to use our influence for their benefit.”
As you can see, Trump’s ambassadors are more like global antagonists or rather little children playing with matches in a house full of dynamite. Their willful ignorance and unapologetic arrogance may be what their boss admires in his diplomats, but these traits will prove detrimental to America’s economic and political influence as they continue to erode away all the hard-earned goodwill built up during President Barack Obama’s tenure.
Only time will tell how much America will be able to recover on the international stage after Trump and his cronies are flushed from office.
