On Friday, Donald Trump launched a bizarre attack on a most unlikely target, the U.S. Postal Service. When we consider the fact that Trump doesn’t like to read and has probably never had to stand in line at a post office for any reason, it’s hard to imagine why the postal service would even register on his radar. And yet Trump once again displayed his uncanny proficiency for undermining valuable government institutions whose function and mechanics his limited mind could not begin to understand.
During the early morning hours, Trump railed against the postal service’s discounted delivery rates for online retailers like Amazon, noting that the practice was making the agency “dumber and poorer.”
“Why is the United States Post Office, which is losing many billions of dollars a year, while charging Amazon and others so little to deliver their packages, making Amazon richer and the Post Office dumber and poorer? Should be charging MUCH MORE!”

As to what could have possibly triggered Trump’s sudden disdain for America’s most relied-upon parcel delivery service? Why, it was his favorite morning cartoon show, Fox and Friends, of course. Trump’s comments followed a segment which featured technology trends in 2018. One of those items mentioned was Amazon’s gamble on augmented reality, which in theory could allow online shoppers to preview how products would look in their homes before buying.
In the past, Trump’s repeatedly engaged in online battles with billionaire Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and heavily criticized Bezo’s ownership of the Washington Post, a publication which Trump often calls “fake news.”
Now Trump’s managed to insult thousands of hard-working postal service workers who are still into their busiest, most stressful season of the year, and perhaps make them fear for their futures. It’s no secret that the GOP would love to privatize the USPS and have pushed plans to do so for years. With Trump in office, railing against the agency, it very possible that their schemes could materialize into actionable legislation.
