While the National Rifle Association may have been able to bully Donald Trump and the GOP into doing nothing about gun control after the Parkland shooting, much of America has responded by taking matters into their own hands and responding with action.
Dick’s Sporting Goods was one company that announced it would be doing its part to decrease gun violence by refusing to sell “assault-style rifles” in its stores. The company made this announcement back in February, and it has recently doubled down to say that it will be taking yet another major step: The unsold rifles will not be returned to manufacturers — they will be destroyed instead. A spokesperson for the major sports retailer said:
We are in the process of destroying all firearms and accessories that are no longer for sale as a result of our February 28th policy change… We are destroying the firearms in accordance with federal guidelines and regulations.”
This is a massive move toward making guns less accessible and goes against what is typically done with unsold goods. Dick’s Sporting Goods plans to destroy the rifles at its distribution sites and will send off the remnants to be recycled.
Aside from refusing to sell assault-style rifles, the company has also stated it will remove high-capacity magazines from its stores and will raise the minimum age to purchase firearms to 21.
All of this, in combination with its new policy to destroy the unsold firearms, is making the NRA have a temper tantrum that could rival Donald Trump’s. The NRA took to Twitter to blast the company’s “business model”, which is a far more responsible response than anything the NRA has ever done after a mass shooting. The NRA whined, “What a waste.”
This truly exposes the NRA’s real priorities — which have nothing to do with responsible gun use, and everything to do with selling and distributing as many guns as humanly possible.
