Mexico Puts Trump In His Place After He Greets Their Disasters With Silence

There is never going to be a time when Donald Trump is not going to embarrass the hell out of us. We have two major natural disasters to deal with in Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. Mexico also has two major disasters to deal with – an 8.1-magnitude earthquake and their own hurricane. They were very quick to offer us condolences and aid for Harvey relief, but Trump’s silence on their disasters has caused them to yank their aid from us.

Their official reason is because that aid is now needed at home. It’s just a little coincidental that they did it after several days of silence, though. The earthquake that devastated two provinces and killed at least 95 people happened last Thursday, and Hurricane Katia hit Mexico’s gulf coast on Saturday. Trump has had plenty of time to say something. He could even have found a moment to tweet something.

But both disasters happened with nary a peep from Trump, although Texas’ governor, Greg Abbott, said he’d accept Mexico’s generous offer of generators, medical help and food. Mexico offered all of that while Trump was busy blasting them for yet again being the highest-crime nation in the world (false), and saying—for the million-billionth time—that they were going to pay for his stupid, pointless border wall.

Trump tweeted earlier today that it was “a great honor to welcome Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak of Malaysia” to the White House. He congratulated his son and daughter-in-law for the birth of their new son. He blasted the “fake news” media again. He talked about Irma. He bragged about his response to Irma.

But nothing at all to Mexico, which experienced devastation just before Irma hit us.

Mexico may well need what it planned to give us, and there’s nothing wrong with that. An earthquake of that magnitude is just as devastating as a major hurricane. Trump’s silence on the matter is just about the worst thing he can do to an ally, though. If we, like them, need to keep our resources here to handle our own problems, fine. But to not even offer them condolences…that’s very unpresidential.

It’s also extremely petty, but Trump has shown himself to be a petty child before. It’s going to take more backlash against his behavior for him to grudgingly acknowledge that Mexico has problems, too, and that we stand with them even as we weather our own disasters.
