Shortly after the presidential election, with liberal opposition to Trump’s incoming presidency reaching a fever pitch, a viral photo emerged online that took the wind out of the sails of the protesters. In a disgusting photograph, a supposed protester was carrying a “rape Melania” sign.

Trump supporters latched onto the photo as “proof” that liberals were sexist, violent anarchists who didn’t have reasonable concerns with Trump but were merely depraved. On the other side, Democrats condemned the sign and distanced themselves from the “bad” protesters.
And that’s exactly what the guys who made the sign had hoped for.
In a bombshell report, Buzzfeed has learned that the creators of the sign were not, as many assumed, wayward liberal protesters. They were Trump’s own fans. The sign’s creation and its subsequent viral march across the internet were choreographed to delegitimize the anti-Trump movement. And they were willing to call for the sexual assault of Trump’s wife to do it.
BuzzFeed News has learned, the “Rape Melania” sign was not the work of an anti-Trump protester at all. Instead, according to sources, it was the brainchild of a group of Trump supporters led by Jack Posobiec, one of the organizers of the controversial DeploraBall inauguration party and a prominent figure in the pro-Trump internet.
Furthermore, as shown by a series of Posobiec’s text messages obtained by BuzzFeed News and confirmed by a source who collaborated with Posobiec, the sign was the culmination of a disinformation campaign by Posobiec and others intended to paint the anti-Trump rallies as violent and out of control.
Further confirming that Posobiec was behind this, a video posted by several Trump fans the night of the protest shows Posobiec wearing an identical hoodie as the man in the photo. (They may be deplorable, but nobody ever said Trump supporters were smart.)
The fact that Trump’s supporters would stoop so low only highlights the twisted way many of his fiercest defenders view their role during his presidency. Win at all costs. And just like Trump himself, things like truth and dignity should be ignored for underhanded tactics that achieve their goals without the merit.
Jack Posobiec, an “alt-right” white nationalist who works for something called “Citizens for Trump,” seemingly invented the “rape Melania” angle after his first plan – screaming “assassinate Trump” at a protest rally until he could film someone repeating him – didn’t catch on.
Trump recently dismissed claims that CNN and Buzzfeed had reported on regarding his ties to Russia as “fake news,” but ironically, it’s the misinformation campaigns conducted by Trump’s own followers that are the most disturbing and definitely fit the description. The echo chamber on the right, borne of years of Fox News insisting that the “mainstream media” is a liberal conspiracy, is so intense that many of Trump’s supporters believe quite literally anything he or his team tell them. Exploiting this, people like Posobiec can push false narratives that are stunningly audacious and yet spread like wildfire on social media.
