When Donald Trump took another shot at making himself look semi-human on Monday by insisting during a news conference at the White House that he calls and sends letters to the families of fallen American soldiers, he did it in his usual way: Not by simply stating what he does and letting people judge him by his actions, but by lying about the actions of others to make himself look better by comparison.
Unfortunately for Trump, there’s a thing called “factual history” that happens whenever any person says or does a thing, or doesn’t say or do a thing, or simply inhabits this plane of existence during a passage of time of any length whatsoever. Literally all of everything, ever, is recorded history, a fact that Donald Trump seems to have a hard time coming to grips with.
So when Trump finally called Myeshia Johnson, the pregnant widow of Sergeant La David Johnson, who was killed in Niger in an ambush nearly two weeks ago, his customary difficulty with the concept of “witnesses” and “facts” failed to prevent him from not just saying something horrible to the grieving woman, but then lying about it afterward.
According to Congresswoman Frederica Wilson, the US Representative for the district where Johnson lived with his family, the president told Myeshia that her husband “knew what he signed up for,” which is possibly the shittiest way a person can say “you should have expected him to die.” How would Wilson have known what Trump said to Myeshia? She was actually present with her at the time, as was Cowanda Jones-Johnson, another family member who raised the soldier. Like, in the actual car with Myeshia while the actual phone call took place. Jones-Johnson corroborated Rep. Wilson’s account of the call.
Trump, predictably, lost his shit.
Early on Wednesday, the president tweeted his denial:
Democrat Congresswoman totally fabricated what I said to the wife of a soldier who died in action (and I have proof). Sad!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 18, 2017
Trump later claimed that Rep. Wilson had backed down from her claims after he said he had “proof.”
I didn’t say what that congresswoman said. Didn’t say it at all. She knows it. And she now is not saying it. I did not say what she said.”
Wilson fired back:
I still stand by my account of the call b/t @realDonaldTrump and Myeshia Johnson. That is her name, Mr. Trump. Not “the woman” or “the wife”
— Rep Frederica Wilson (@RepWilson) October 18, 2017
Now, if Trump was simply having a spat with a Democrat over a “he said/she said” issue, that would be one thing. But this is the president of the United States not only calling Rep. Frederica Wilson a liar, he’s also calling Myeshia Johnson and Cowanda Jones-Johnson liars as well. Trump is literally calling the pregnant wife of a dead soldier a liar in the time of her greatest grief.
How any American can still support this man or his administration is beyond me. But I certainly hope that they will stop trying to claim they care about fallen soldiers and just admit they will defend Donald Trump no matter what horrible things history records him saying and doing.
