When Donald Trump launched his presidential campaign, Caitlyn Jenner raised eyebrows when she announced that she was not only a Republican, but she was one of his supporters.
Jenner has become has become a major voice for the LGBTQ community, as the transgender Olympic gold medal winner went through a public transition on her reality television show, I Am Cait, where she first announced she was pro-Trump. She has also been seen regularly sporting a “Make America Great Again” cap, but it doesn’t look like she’ll be wearing it anymore.
Last week, Trump announced that he wanted to ban transgender individuals from serving in the U.S. military – and this has apparently broken the spell that Jenner was under. Now, Jenner reportedly “detests Trump” and believes that “what he’s doing to our community is absolutely f*cking awful.” She responded to Trump’s announcement on Twitter, nailing the transphobic POTUS:
However, this didn’t prevent several people from calling Jenner out and trashing her for supporting Trump in the first place. People attacked Jenner for her ignorance, pointing out that Trump’s hatred for the LGBTQ community should have been obvious to her.
Jenner tried to explain her new stance by releasing a full statement on her website:
“I believe every American should be outraged by the disrespect shown to those people wearing our country’s uniform. Furthermore, this half-baked idea puts all of our service members in harm’s way….Over the past two years I have met the most inspiring trans people, and I can testify to the trans community’s incredible resilience and perseverance in the face of enormous discrimination and hate. We are strong, we are beautiful, and we will win. The President must ask himself which side of history he will be on — and reverse his position immediately.”
And what is Jenner going to do with her MAGA hat now that she won’t be wearing it? She is thinking of signing it and auctioning it off so that she can donate the proceeds to a transgender cause. She said:
“I apologize to all of the trans community. I made a mistake. I will never do it again and I’m getting rid of the hat.”
Thank god Jenner finally woke up, like many of Trump’s voters are beginning to. While it’s unfortunate that Jenner was fooled in the first place, it’s better late than never.
