BREAKING: Top GOP Rep Abruptly Quits; Releases Stunning Statement To Congress (DETAILS)

Many GOP departures have been overly dramatic and steeped in various qualities of soap opera-level intrigue. Some Republicans are now releasing their resignation via Twitter, Trump’s infamous platform for big announcements.

On Tuesday morning, longtime GOP lawmaker Charlie Dent wrote on Twitter that he will resign from Congress in the coming weeks.

Dent, the leader of an influential caucus of GOP moderates, said in a statement that he made the decision after “discussions with his family and careful reflection.”

“After discussions with my family & careful reflection, I have decided to leave Congress in the coming weeks. Serving the people of #PA15 has been a tremendous responsibility & the privilege of a lifetime.”

Last year, Dent had announced that he would not run for re-election after 2018, but many Republicans assumed he would finish out his term until then. Dent’s resignation comes after all the chaos bestowed by the Trump administration, which could be a deciding factor in his decision to leave early.

Nonetheless, Dent’s exit will likely prompt a special election for his seat. Under state law, “Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf has 10 days after the vacancy is official to declare a special election. That election must occur at least 60 days after he makes the announcement. The party’s nominees are chosen by party leaders rather than through an election.”

The 15th district that Dent currently represents is a Republican-leaning seat where Trump won by 8 points in 2016. However, the new district that Dent is vacating under the 2018 lines is considered Democratic-leaning. The dynamics in Pennsylvania will be shifting tremendously in the next upcoming weeks.
