In the federal hearing in the case against Trump attorney Michael Cohen this afternoon in the Southern District of New York, there was plenty of intrigue, both in and outside of the courtroom.
First, Cohen and his lawyers refused to release the names of his other clients besides Donald Trump, citing attorney-client privilege. Then it was revealed that one of the clients that Cohen had been trying to conceal was Fox News host Sean Hannity, who likely retained the mob-like services of Cohen’s firm in order to defend himself against charges of harassment over his haranguing of the family of Seth Rich, a former DNC staffer who was murdered in a botched robbery attempt in 2016.
But the primary effort by Team Trump on Monday was to attempt to prevent federal agents from reviewing the mountains of evidence that were seized from Cohen’s offices on April 9th. Last week, Cohen’s own attorneys argued that there were “thousands if not millions” of so-called privileged documents among the items seized by the FBI in the early-morning search.
Trump’s lawyers demanded that authorities be blocked from studying the Cohen evidence until the president’s own attorneys could first look at any items relating to him in order to decide whether they were “protected” by presidential or attorney-client privilege. Federal prosecutors essentially accused Trump of trying to obtain special treatment and urged Judge Kimba Wood to reject Trump’s demands.
Ultimately, that’s exactly what Wood did, but only after having used the issue to force Cohen to divulge the names of his clients.
Clearly, there are materials recovered from Cohen’s office that Donald Trump and his own attorneys are desperate to keep a secret, although that appears to no longer be possible for his legal team, having lost their bid in court to at least shield some of the seized evidence from federal prosecutors’ eyes.
As Monday winds on, things look worse and worse for Team Trump.
