This is a couple of years old, but things haven’t changed for the better. In 2013, Conan O’Brien did a series of videos showing news anchors from all over the nation repeating the exact same lines.
In the video below, the line is: “Well, it’s okay, you can admit it if you have bought an item, or two, or maybe 10 for yourself.” Almost every one of the two dozen or so anchors repeated that line verbatim, with a couple of minor omissions and ad-libs.
The story they’re covering is pretty benign. People spend money on themselves for Christmas. That’s barely news, let alone controversial, but what happens when it’s real news, a story where truth matters?
Those scripts, increasingly, are being written by CNN, and yes, even Fox. CNN has a news service called Newsource, which is a news feed similar to the Associated Press. The difference, though, is that the Associated Press doesn’t give an actual script.
