NC School Board Cites HB2 ‘Bathroom Bill’ To Justify Students Carrying Pepper Spray

The Salisbury Post reports that the Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education in North Carolina voted to allow students to carry pepper spray while on campus:

High school students will be allowed to carry mace in the 2016-2017 school year after the Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education agreed to remove prohibitive language and amend its policy.

The board spent some time at its Monday work session in the Wallace Education Forum debating whether pepper spray and other defensive sprays, as well as personal shaving razors, should be allowed on school campuses.

Some of the pro-pepper spray arguments were perfectly rational and even enlightened:

[Chairman Josh] Wagner suggested adding language to allow the canisters in locked vehicles, but Susan Cox pointed out that often, there’s a long walk between a football stadium and a locked vehicle.

But, being as this is North Carolina, one of the school board members couldn’t stop themselves from bringing up the nonexistent threat of The Transgendered Pervert Stalking You In The Bathroom:

Board member Chuck Hughes was in favor of the sprays on campuses, saying that in his mind, they were purely defensive. He also referenced HB2, saying that the sprays might be useful.

“Depending on how the courts rule on the bathroom issues, it may be a pretty valuable tool to have on the female students if they go to the bathroom, not knowing who may come in,” he said.

This is how the nonstop bullshit coming from Republicans have consequences in the real world. The more politicians fearmonger, the more likely it is that a transgender woman or even a woman that’s just not “girly” enough will be assaulted by a panicked idiot with pepper spray or, worse, a gun. Not because they were a threat, but because someone convinced the easily manipulated into believing they MIGHT be a threat.
