Alabama’s first openly gay legislator, Rep. Patricia Todd (D) is letting the Republicans of her state know that she is not going to put up with their ‘family values’ hypocrisy any longer. After high ranking Republicans decried the court ruling that struck down the state’s same-sex marriage ban, she went to Facebook and called them out:
This (is) a time where you find out who are accepting, loving people. To say I am disappointed in Speaker Hubbard comment’s and Attorney General Strange choice to appeal the decision is an understatement. I will not stand by and allow legislators to talk about ‘family values’ when they have affairs, and I know of many who are and have. I will call our elected officials who want to hide in the closet OUT. [Source]
Speaker of the House Mike Hubbard angered Todd when he released a statement after a federal judge struck down the state’s marriage ban and vowed to keep fighting for
homophobia ‘Christian values.’
It is outrageous when a single unelected and unaccountable federal judge can overturn the will of millions of Alabamians who stand in firm support of the Sanctity of Marriage Amendment. The Legislature will encourage a vigorous appeals process, and we will continue defending the Christian conservative values that make Alabama a special place to live. [Source]
Todd is right to be angry. Republicans use their family values rhetoric to win over voters, but how many times have we heard of them cheating on their spouses?
One of the right’s biggest pro-homophobia, anti-equality arguments is that they are trying to protect the sanctity of marriage. It’s kinda hard to argue that when you have a mistress, right?
They hypocrisy is the most offensive thing according to Todd:
If certain people come out and start espousing this rhetoric about family values, then I will say, ‘Let’s talk about family values, because here’s what I heard.’……One thing I’m pretty consistent on is I do not like hypocrites. If you can explain your position and you hold yourself to the same standard you want to hold me to, then fine. But you cannot go out there and smear my community by condemning us and somehow making us feel less than, and expect me to be quiet. [Source]
The Republican ‘family values’ are the biggest load of crap the party has ever tried to sell to the American people. It’s refreshing to see a lawmaker put them on notice that she will fight dirty if need be.
Todd never named any names, she didn’t have to. Her point is very clear: screw with me and my community and I will screw with you.
