Author J.K.Rowling’s Heartbreaking Tweet About Orlando Victim Luis Vielma

In the aftermath of the tragic Orlando hate crime that claimed at least 50 members of the LGBT community, an outpouring of grief and sympathy has swept social media. Much of it is a blanket statement mourning all of the victims but as the names of the deceased are released, so too, are the individuals being mourned by those who were connected to them.

One such statement comes from J.K.Rowling, the author of the “Harry Potter” series. Upon learning that one of the victims was 22-year-old Luis Vielma, who worked at the Harry Potter theme park at Universal Studios, she was reduced to tears:

Putting a face and name and life to one of the victims made it real in a way just reading about it never could.

Rowling also retweeted several replies from people who had worked with or met the young Potter fan:

And another about a second victim who also worked at Universal:

As the names of all of the victims are released, we will learn more about the lives that were needlessly cut short by the hatred of a right-wing religious extremist. 50 lives full of hope and promise, ended just for being who they were. At some point, we as a nation are going to admit that words have consequences and hold those that spew hatred responsible.

Until then, we can expect more of this kind of mindless hate and all we can do is respond with the compassion and love that Rowling displayed.
